Wellness Remedies

Wellness Remedies

Spring is almost here!
A lot of people I know are having issues with sinus, sore throats, coughs etc.
Those who know me, are asking me for a natural remedy instead of over-the-counter products.

I am a firm believer in starting the day with a coconut oil pulling session, followed by a morning cup of warm lemon water/raw honey. Some days if I'm feeling sore, I will have a mixture of Turmeric and honey.  By starting a daily wellness routine you can stay healthy and prevent or lessen the severity of any cold etc. that comes your way.

Here are few natural remedies for what ails you:
Colds:
Soothe- honey ginger tea, 1/2 cup grated/sliced ginger, 4 cups water(bring to a boil)
add ginger for 20 minutes, add honey to tatse.
Heal- greens for healing(alkaline-antiviral) Super green lemonade.
Sore throat- Turmeric gargle, 1/2 cup warm water,1/2 tsp turmeric, a pinch of sea salt.
Nasal- daily neti pot. This really works!, If I miss a day, my sleep is disrupted. Not to mention  Kris'.
If you know what I mean.

The Ultimate Cold Killer Shot:
1 cup filtered water.
2 tbs raw apple cider vinegar.
2 tbs grated ginger.
Juice of one lemon.
Dash of cayenne pepper.
1-2 cloves pressed garlic.
1 tbs raw honey.
Combine all ingredients in a mason jar, shake it up, pour in a shot glass.
Drink it throughout the day. Store in the refrigerator.

For a sore throat:
Slice a 2-3 inch piece of fresh ginger and bring 4 cups of water to a boil. reduce heat and let simmer 10-15 minutes. remove from heat and let coll awhile. Discard the ginger.
Add/stir juice of 1 lemon and 1/4 cup of raw honey. When at room temperature, add 4 cups of ice into a high speed blender and make a slushie. Feels great on a sore throat!

For everyday wellness:
1.5 cups of filtered water
7 tbs of organic apple cider vinegar
Juice of 1 lemon
1 tbs of raw honey
A dash of cayenne pepper
Just combine all ingredients and shake, store in a glass jar in the refrigerator.
This makes about five servings, pour into a shot glass and take once a day
ACV is loaded with beneficial enzymes and good gut bacteria.  The acetic acid can help kill off candida, which causes anxiety, depression, acne, fatigue and foggy brain.  The lemon is full of vitamin C and promotes the liver to produce bile which promotes digestion and remove toxins from our system.

For a cough:
Honey and cinnamon with a pinch of Himalayan salt.
In a small jar, mix 4 tsp of raw honey and 1 tsp of cinnamon, add a pinch of salt.
Take a 1-2 tsp of mixture two times per day for a few days.
Not only will your cough reside, it has positive effects in reducing blood pressure.
By mixing it in lukewarm water it moves through the bladder and cleanse's it of infections.  It also helps relieve arthritis pain and strengthens the immune system.

So there you have it, with just a few different ingredients you can get healthy and by eating clean, exercise and plenty of good sleep, you can stay healthy.

Kris made some Roasted Red Pepper Hummus  yesterday...its almost gone!
Check out the purple cauliflower from our local farmer- Tomazin Family Farms since 1916!
Thanks Paul for all the veggies!

Have a great week.

When to eat fruit?

When to eat fruit?

We all know the benefits of eating fruit.
Most fruits are high in fiber, folate, potassium, vitamin c and many more nutrients.
All these nutrients and minerals help guard against disease, strokes and high blood pressure.

Fruit is a natural detoxification tool and provides us with natural sugars.
When eaten the correct way and time it will cleanse the body of toxins and help the digestive system.
When fruit is eaten, the digestive process works very quickly. Our body uses different enzymes
to digest fruit and it needs to process the fiber and nutrients separately. That is why it is best eaten by itself, first thing in the morning.  You absorb all the nutrients and vitamins and avoid digestive problems.  If you think about it, it is easier for your body to digest one type of food or fruit, then a crazy combination of buffet style food!
Remember how you feel after going to a "buffet" and stuffing yourself with numerous different foods.  I refuse to do that anymore!

When you eat fruit with other foods, it stays in the stomach too long( other foods digest slower) and begins to rot and ferment!  By eating only fruit in the morning and fruit as a mid-morning snack, you will kick your metabolism into high gear.  Great way to lose weight and have plenty of energy.  Everything will be digested by lunch time and you will be ready for a great meal to continue through the day.

Here is a great chapter from Dr. Garth Davis' book "Proteinaholic"
Also a link to a great Rich Roll podcast about a ultra-runner, who only eats fruit!

Have a great week.

Marvellous Matcha

Marvellous Matcha

Matcha powder originated in China and has been around for a thousand years.
It is produced by stone-grinding green tea leaves.  So you are actually eating your green tea.
The powder is used in smoothies etc., but also you can just add it to water or even juice.
One serving of powder is equivalent to ten cups of brewed green tea!  By brewing the leaves in hot water, you are only getting 10% of its nutrients.

Espresso coffee= 60mg caffeine
Matcha powder= 34mg caffeine
The caffeine in Matcha has a longer effect because of amino acids and L theanine.
L theanine has a calming effect and slow releases the caffeine.  Which gives a clear mental
alertness, clarity, immune defense and detoxification.

Matcha tea contains the unique potent class of anti-oxidants called Catechins.
These anti-oxidants are only found in plants and provide potent cancer fighting properties
and many other health benefits.
They have the highest levels of anti-oxidants than other foods, including dark chocolate, acai berries,
blueberries etc.

The next time you need a healthy lift during the day have a Matcha drink.
When at Starbucks, ask for a Venti ice water with 3 scoops of matcha powder,
with shot of coconut milk. You will be pleasantly surprised.
It's on there secret menu and should only cost 84 cents-to $2.50, depending on where you're at.

You can find Matcha at Whole Foods, etc or order it online.
Here's a short video from Nutritionfacts.org.

Snowboarding in NYC

Snowboarding in NYC

I first learned of Casey Neistat in 2012.
I watched a video he created for Nike "Make it Count" and I was hooked.
His work ethics are nonstop controlled chaos and even has "do more" tattooed
on his forearm.
He started to do a daily "vlog" about ten months ago. He wanted to keep his motivation and
film making fresh and is now on day # 305.

Today's vlog was epic and had over 2.5 million views in the first 7 hours.
If you haven't already seen, here it is:
You can watch the "behind the scenes" at:

His outlooks on life, work and family are contagious and makes you want go out and be creative.
So check it out.
But be careful, you might get pulled in and end up watching all 300+
vlogs from the beginning.

Kris and I look forward to viewing the vlog everyday.
Especially if his daughter "Francine" makes an appearance.

Have a great week.

Pickled Banana Peppers

Pickled Banana Peppers(and Pickles!)

Here's a quick easy recipe for pickled sliced banana peppers, with no Sodium Benzoate.

1 cup of Bragg's organic apple cider vinegar
1 cup of filtered water
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
6-9 banana peppers, stems removed and sliced thinly into rounds

Combine vinegar, water, sugar and salt in small pan,
Bring to a boil, stirring in sugar and salt to dissolve.
Remove from heat and add sliced peppers.
Stir until peppers soften and should be mostly submerged in the liquid.
Cool to room temperature.
Store in an airtight glass container, making sure peppers are covered with the liquid.
They are great by themselves or on sandwiches.
They stay fresh for about 2 months, but you will have eaten them by then!

You can make your own pickles this way!
Add the spices of your choice: dill, red pepper flakes etc.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

2015 is gone.  All the joys, accomplishments, sorrows and mistakes!
2016 is here.  It is time to start fresh.
We can not change the past and we can not predict the future.
We can only learn from our past  victories and mistakes.
We can also prepare our goals for the future and set into motion the plans
to obtain them.
Of the many goals I have this year, I believe most of them can be obtained thru
"being present in the moment".  It changes your frame of reference entirely.
In the big picture, it really is all that we have: "The Present Moment"
Focus on where you are, who you are with and what needs are to be met at that moment.

Here are two great articles on that subject:

Now is the time.
Set your goals.
Set the course to accomplish them.
Give it 100%.
