This photo was taken at The Garden of Gods in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

It has been quite a while since the last post (July), so I apologize.

Let's finish off the year with a recommended reading list.

 Health/Food

If you don't know yet, Cardiologist Dr. Joel Kahn tells us "Everything You Need to Know To Start A Plant-based Diet"

From "The No Meat Athlete": 7 Foods Worth Eating Eating Single Day How many do you consume? He along with Robert Cheeke have an incredible new book out called "The Plant-Based Athlete"

Did you know that our bodies produce molecules called cannabinoids, the body's own version of THC and CBD

What the hell is "Sulforaphane" and "Why it is so good for you"  then check out

 "Broccoli- The DNA Whisperer"

Environment

The environment and our health go hand in hand.  Climate change is REAL and our food and lifestyle choices should be the first option in doing our part in helping curb this CRISIS.

How much food is wasted in the world? 1.4 BILLION TONS per YEAR! 80 Billion pounds in the United States alone, which equals 30-40% of food produced.

The U.S. could feed 800 million people with the grain that livestock is fed.

India is turning "Waste to Watts" using biogas digesters to turn organic waste into electricity.

Did you know the world's largest living single organism is in Pando Forest, Utah?  Alarmingly, deer and elk are devouring it.

Here in Florida, they are thinking a 20 foot seawall will save Miami from rising sea water.

The year was 1856. Scientists understood physics of climate change.  What The Fuck!

Over the past year our son, Jay Bird, "The Bird Nerd" ( I say that lovingly) has been utilizing an app by The Audubon Society to spend time outdoors and learning about the native birds in his area. Kris and I downloaded this app yesterday and already have been using it.  It is an easy way to get outdoors and enjoy nature and an awesome learning tool.

Over the past few weeks I have come across a multitude of articles that are very interesting.  I hope you enjoy this section of the blog as I much as I do researching them. Knowledge is power.

Let's get started with

ENVIRONMENT

Speaking about the Audubon Society...here's one from National Geographic:

Bringing back the "Most Endangered Bird"  in America.

This one hits home for me, as my work involves some time spent in The Everglades and surrounding areas:

Big Cypress National Park Drilling.

Texas is getting called out on:

Wind Power Lies

Come on Texas, who are you trying to fool: Blackouts weren't caused by renewables.

Aren't there farms in Texas?

South Korea knows what's going on: $43 Billion dollar Worlds largest offshore wind farm.

It's called a "Forest Town", a 42,000 home "eco city" being built in Singapore.

The wild ways  "Local Governments" are blocking renewable energy.

What are the benefits of a "Blue Economy"

Rewilding: How Cities are Prioritizing Green Spaces

HEALTH

What diet is worst for the environment?  IT IS NOT A PLANT-BASED DIET

Trying to eat healthier.. What are "anti-nutrients?

This is an interesting concept: What if Doctors were paid to keep people well?

Here's a free Plant-based Mini Course from The Center for Nutrition Studies

CRAZY SHIT

Guaranteed Income Works

Two Atomic Bombs fell on North Carolina! WHAT!

Russia's Monster Submarines are even scarier than you can imagine.

You can now own The Skinniest House in London, it's only six feet wide.

How about a "Double-decker Bus" with a fireplace, bathtub and walk-in closet.

There is no better way to occupy your down time then by reading.  Instead of mindless scrolling through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram etc. read a book.  Exercise your mind, gain knowledge, learn something new and travel the world without leaving your couch.  Just remember to get up and move!  There has to be a balance.

These articles are all from Globalcitizen.org:

Ditch the plastic bottles and Save the Environment and drink tap water.  Tap water may not be the healthiest choice, but tap water is 3500 times less expensive than bottled water.  My choice is 1/2 tsp Pink Himalayan Salt , 1 "Zinger" tea bag added to 1 gallon of distilled water.
On the environmental technology side introducing "Tidal" , from the "X" Company.  Humanity is pushing the ocean past its breaking point and soon there will more plastic than fish.

I recently finished reading a book by New York Times bestselling author Bill McKibben, who founded 350.org, the first global citizens movement to combat climate change. The book: "Falter" is the latest of his writings, his call to arms to save our faltering planet and possibly humankind,  While it may seem depressing of what we have done to our beautiful planet, it gives hope that we can at least slow down the destruction process and still have hope for a great future.  There is no "Planet b", we must change the way we are headed.
"We're the only creature who can decide not to do something we're capable of doing.  That's are superpower, even if we exercise it so rarely.  Because we can destroy, but also because we can decide not to destroy.
This is a must read.

This month, the post will be all about Climate Emergency.   Recommended articles, podcasts, etc. pertaining to our environment, food production and how are choices are either helping or hurting our lives and our planet.

It is hard for me to comprehend that there are those who don't believe in "climate change".  Most of those who don't are either burying their heads in the sand or get misguided information from those like: The Top 10 Climate Deniers.  Here are "12 Excuses for Climate Inaction and How to Refute Them".
The easiest way to help in combating climate change is moving to a plant-based diet.  Change Your Diet to Combat Climate Change in 2019.   Animal agriculture is not a sustainable industry and is the second largest contributor to greenhouse emissions.  Industrial animal agriculture is at the heart of our environmental crisis.  5 Ways to Eating More Plant-Based Foods  Benefits The Environment .  To feed the ever increasing population we must first change the way we farm our lands.  Without efforts to rebuild soil health, we could lose our ability to grow enough nutritious food to feed the planet's population.

I understand that this some disheartening information to read about.  What is our other options?  We have the power to change the way we live our lives.  We are capable of doing great things together.  The human project has long been a group effort.

Making New Year resolutions is a great idea, but it always seems we stick to them for a few short weeks and then we are back to old habits.  This year, let's break that chain and really make some life-changing decisions and follow through with them.  If we can redirect the energy from our bad habits into something more productive for a long enough period of time, we can form new good habits.

My first recommendation is:
Wellth, a wonderful book by the founder of Mindbodygreen.com, Jason Wachob.  This is great starting place for creating new habits and a balanced healthy life.
If you have gone through sh*t in your life, haven't we all, it would be a safe bet it is nothing like what David Goggins  has been through.  I have listened to a few podcasts with this, tell it like it is, quit whining, stop asking questions and just f-ing do it, incredible person.  His book "Can't Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy The Odds" will make you have a totally different outlook on what you can accomplish in life.  It is also available in audio version with many commentary extras, which I am listening to at the moment.

Are you a runner?  Do you like history?  There is more to the origin of the "marathon" then you think.   Road To Sparta is a very interesting book by Ultra marathoner Dean Karnazes.

Foggy, Anxious, Irritable?,  here's what toxins can do to your brain.
Wabi Sabi,  This philosophy will help you embrace change and accept the past.
Get Off the Crack!: 8 ways to cut sugar from our diets.  We know that sugar is the root of many chronic diseases.
You should incorporate more flaxseeds into your diet.  Full of heart-healthy fats and fiber rich.

On the environmental side:
This company is turning sewage into fuel with no carbon emissions.
This one really hits home with me: Stop Tossing Your Banana Peel On The Trail
Conservation International's Nature Is Speaking: Forest

First up is some environmental news..we all know that plastic is everywhere, "How much is there?"
Studies show its possible that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish.   Invasive species also ride the plastic flotilla across the oceans creating havoc on native habitats.  Did you know that even flushing used contact lens are adding to the micro plastic problem we are facing?  On the bright side researchers have found a giant deep-sea coral reef 160 miles off the coast of South Carolina.  Named the "Richardson Ridge" it is almost 80 miles long and full of healthy coral.

We all know when changing to a plant-based diet cheese is the hardest food to give up! I did a post on dairy a few years back, see it here for more info.  This article by on OneGreenPlanet shows how the dairy industry is changing their views on plant-based milks: Dairy-free yogurts.  And why does the United States let the Dairy Industry have so much power: Breaking The Dairy Addiction: Dr. Neal Barnard/Rich Roll.  Because of the growing interests in plant-based milks, the dairy industry has a surplus of unsold milk.  So they make cheese out it, and now have  1.39 Billion Pounds of surplus cheese.  Maybe stop producing so much milk and reduce some greenhouse gases?  You can always make your own delicious plant-based, dairy-free cheeses.

It's recommended reading time again.  I hope you enjoy these posts as much as I do.

Last week I did not post anything as I was busy volunteering at the North Florida Spartan race.  The week before I volunteered to help build/setup the course, always a great time.  Last Sunday, only my grandson raced so I helped with the kid's race.  It was very rewarding seeing the determination and enjoyment those kids were having.  they were covered in sweat, plenty of mud and most had smiling faces.  This my grandson with a high five as he crossed the finish line.

This month's reading and viewing suggestions have more to do with the environment.
There is difference of opinions on whether "climate change" or "global warming" is a real thing.  I believe it is very real and a very major threat to our environment and how we will deal with human existence.  Multiple lines of scientific evidence show that the climate system is warming.
Climate Change, "11 things you need to know" is a great article by Conservation International.
Splitting of the Polar Vortex" by Forbes Magazine is frightening.   Did you know that the North Pole even though still shrouded in darkness for another month has had record warm temperatures.  45' Fahrenheit  above normal! It has had above freezing temperatures.
We all remember Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010.  This could very well happen again.  The Dept of Interior headed by Ryan Zinke wants to allow offshore drilling to be resumed off the coasts of the U.S.  It is a recipe for disaster. Make time to read an excellent book by Abraham Lustgarden titled Run to Failure.  It details British Petroleum's negligent actions leading up to the Deepwater Horizons blowout. Then sign the petition from Surfrider Foundation to stop offshore oil drilling.

Another major problem with our oceans is plastic pollution.  Plastic "lives" forever.  Gradually over time in just degrades into smaller and smaller pieces.  Only 9% of plastic is recycled, the rest ending up in our waterways, oceans and landfills.  Sea life and wildlife ingest the degraded plastics and die a slow agonizing death.  Small fish consume the microscopic plastic particles  believing they are a food source.  They are consumed by larger predators, which are then consumed by those who use fish as a source of food.  Check out this article from Global Citizen about How a College Dropout Plans to Rid The Oceans of Plastic.

Switching gears.. on to a few nutrition recommendations.
Inflammation in our bodies is the root of many chronic health issues.
We all know the importance of Eating Our Greens, here's 8 Greens You're Probably Not Eating Enough.

For my podcast recommendation: Rich Roll talks with Jared Blumenfeld, on planetary preservation.  Jared has worked with National Resource Defense Council, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the City of San Francisco, and was the EPA's administrator for the Pacific Southwest Region.

It's time for the first 2018 recommended reading suggestion.

A great way to start the New Year is:

I believe all whole foods are Superfoods but here is a list of the 10 of the Most Affordable Superfoods. according to One Green Planet.

This is an informative article from Mind Body Green on how the human body is so brilliantly designed: How to Control Your Hunger and Hormones

Afterwards, you can get more insight from Josh listening to Rich Rolls podcast with him: Josh LaJaunie's Transformation

It's recommended reading time.  I hope you enjoy the articles, videos, etc. that I share with you.  I try to give a wide range of different ideas, as it is always good to broaden our horizons.
With the winter Olympics just around the corner ,the first suggestion is podcast by
Rich Roll who talks with Bryan Fogel on "How he exposed the biggest doping scandal in Olympic history"  The interview is quite interesting, but the real eyeopener is the actual documentary on Netflix called Icarus. Not only does this expose the extensive doping scandal in sports but also how this effects world politics. SCARY.
Next up, we all know someone who has student loans. This University says "no more". The US government needs to do this for all future student loans and reduce/remove interest rates on current loans.  That would sure help those are paying high monthly payments now, wouldn't that help the economy?
Here's a tip on keeping our berries fresh, and longer in the refrigerator.
For a healthy great brekkie recipe try this Blended Date Oatmeal.
Here's another great easy recipe from "The Happy Pear" for "Mango Tempeh Noodle Curry Bowl"
With the holidays upon us,   "8 Holiday Foods You Should Never Eat" , from Spartan Life.
As I had mention in an earlier post, my son and I joined the "Spartan Trifecta Tribe" yesterday by completing the "The Beast" (and may I say at a record pace).  We've done the Sprint, Super and the Beast in 2017.  There were over 5000 participants yesterday, of all shapes, sizes and ages. It is an accomplishment that anyone who sets their minds to it and "gets off the couch" can achieve.  It will totally change your mindset and life.  "You will know at the finish line".  Check out Spartan.

Its recommended reading time. This month I have some interesting articles, videos and recipes that I would like to share with you.
The first one is a little scary but very relevant with the debate(REALLY?) on climate change:

We all should know by now the dangers of plastics in our oceans.  Here's another reason that plastic is influencing climate change:

This is one way to reduce the amount of plastic water bottles:
Ooho Edible Water Bubbles I would love to have these!

Conventionally grown foods are heavily sprayed with pesticides.  If possible, we should stay away from these and buy organic. It might be more a little more expensive but well worth the price you will pay later. You should ALWAYS buy spinach organically!:

This could possibly be a solution for the ever growing need for healthy foods for the growing population:

Science-backed research now says 8 common diseases can be cured by a Plant-based Diet.

This why we must:
Even the former President American College of Cardiology believes this to be true;

On a lighter note, my 7 year old grandson produced an awesome "powerpoint" presentation(by himself) for his 2nd grade class using an amazing animated program called, Powtoon
I am really proud of him. I might have to use the same program when needed.
Check out his video: Africa
